Helgi and Katla fall in love as teenagers in the year 1000. Their parents object to their union, and the lovers begin a desperate quest to marry each other. A scheming sister, disapproving parents, sorcery, slander, murder, war, shipwreck and their own foolishness keep them apart, but their determination never dies. In a story that ranges from Rome to Greenland, while Iceland turns from paganism to Christianity and the leaden weight of patriarchy drags them down, their lives touch and are pulled apart again and again as the years go by.
